Pilgrimage or Thru-hike on the Camino

Not everyone agrees that the Camino Frances from St Jean Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela is a thru-hike. After all, thousands of pilgrims each year pay one of roughly 9 transport services to carry their backpacks to the next night’s lodging on their Camino journey. Most purists do not consider that a thru-hike. More of a stroll, perhaps, and why not?

In anticipation of another long walk, I’m beginning to explore what the Via Francigena has in store for me. I don’t think backpack services are available, but is it a thru-hike? Friday’s blog post this week might provide some answers.

Spring will be here before you know it, the season for long walks. For my take on the “true” pilgrim experience, join my walking community and download my mini-guide called Quick Prep for a Slow Walk (on the Camino de Santiago).
